Why retention is an engineering problem, not a marketing one

Downloads, leads and sign-ups are the metrics everyone celebrates. But they measure arrival, not value. The businesses that compound are the ones that engineer what happens after someone arrives.

The three leaks

  1. Activation — the member never reaches the moment where the product becomes useful.
  2. Habit — usage never becomes routine, so the subscription feels optional.
  3. Intervention — the business sees the member go quiet, but acts too late.

Each of these is a systems problem: instrumentation, journey design, and the operating rhythm that turns a signal into an action.

Before prescribing technology, find the constraint.

That is the whole method. Fix the leak that is actually limiting the business — not the one that is easiest to buy a tool for.
